A series that explores the lives of writers. It captures their writing journey and the value of being a part of the writing community.

Today, one of our past winners sat down with us and shared her writing journey and future plans as a writer.

Tomi is a writer who loves sports so much that she wishes to make a career in sports and entertainment.

One random thing about Tomi is that she wrote her first book in primary school, “book of short stories”, but it got misplaced by her aunty. . Her favourite movie is Fast and Furious, and she loves it because it has about 8 series.

Okay, have you written any series, or will you be writing any soon?

I haven’t. I love to write stories and leave the endings to my readers to decide on how they end. I think this inspiration came from Chimamanda because she has a thing for open endings and was the first author I really liked. I remember reading Half of a Yellow Sun and the ending struck me.

Can you tell us about your writing process?

I do not have a particular writing process. I write as ideas come to my head. But for articles, I like to have an outline before I write. When I write stories, I try to write down as many ideas and scenes that come to my mind. Sometimes, I start from the end or middle. It really just depends on the idea that comes to mind when I see the prompt.

Can you share some of your work with us?

I hope to get more writing gigs. Here’s my portfolio.

Have you gotten paid for writing before?

No, I haven’t. The first time I got paid for writing a story was during the Weekly Writing Challenge. Hera Marketing was the first to pay me for my writing and I will include this information when I am writing about my writing journey.

That’s interesting…how do you feel about the weekly writing challenge?

When I first joined the writing challenge, it was because of the prompt. The prompt was intriguing, and I sat down on a Saturday night and started writing. I also asked my friends for feedback on what I wrote. My friends are a big influence on my writing. It also gives me the opportunity to write everytime and helps me build my portfolio. Also, the feedback I received on my story helped me improve my writing for the next submission. I was really pleased with how I used the prompts to improve my writing.

How do your stories make you feel?

I always like to feel proud and happy about my stories. This is why I like to make sure my readers can play out my stories in their minds as they read them. I feel happy when I get feedback that my readers love my stories.

Writing something other than a standard article, with a planned out and written down outline is like a sin to me
